Richmond, VA - GO READ is pleased to announce the culminating event of this year’s
initiative to bring residents of greater Richmond together through reading and discussion
of a designated book. Tim O’Brien, the prize-winning author of The Things They
Carried, this year’s designated book, will be featured in a reading and reception to be
held on Thursday, November 13 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal
Church, 815 East Grace Street in downtown Richmond. The event is free and open to the
public.
GO READ, in the second year of a three-year initiative, is intended to have a lasting
impact on the community by increasing interaction through a shared reading experience.
GO READ brings major authors to a new and diverse audience and promotes discussion
between adults and young people. Last year’s book was A Lesson Before Dying by
Ernest J. Gaines which was read by more than 30,000 people in the region.
Published in 1990, the widely acclaimed The Things They Carried is regarded as the
quintessential fictional work about the Vietnam War. The winner of France’s prestigious
Prix de Meilleur Liver Etranger, The Things They Carried was a finalist for the Pulizer
Prize for fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
