How to get connected: Join the Conversation
Everyone is invited to participate in GO READ. The book selected for
the second year of this three-year program is Tim O'Brien's The Things
They Carried. To be a part of reading and discussing the same book
at the same time, simply follow these steps:
- Obtain the Book - Numerous copies of The Things They Carried are
available throughout the region at your local branch libraries. Local
bookstores also have stocked up on the book. Be sure to tell them you
are participating in the GO READ project by reading the book.
- Read It - this summer and fall join your community, friends,
and family in reading and discussing the same book together.
- Access the Reading Guides - toolkits for
both teachers and reading groups are available on this web site. The
guides are designed to enhance your reading pleasure of The Things
They Carried. Toolkits will also be available at local library
branches by the end of June.
- Join the Conversation - by choosing the title for your book
club, or forming new discussion groups. Use a toolkit to help facilitate
discussions in your home, community center, coffeehouse, or place of
worship. Area libraries and bookstores will also have scheduled book
discussion sessions. Contact them to find out how to participate.
- Post It - let us know what your friends, faith community,
neighborhood, or work groups have planned to do to read and discuss
the book. Post your comments to the GO READ bulletin board at the website.
- Meet the Author - and hear Tim O'Brien read from his award-winning
book. Mr. O'Brien will be in Richmond November 13 as a part of a GO
READ Celebration. Details will be posted to the web site.
