GO READ began as a three year project and has continued with great success for two additional years. Each year the decision to move forward and continue the program is based on the success of the previous year and financial resources.
The 2006/2007 project was a real success in many ways: great school involvement, more diverse community participation, and broader PR coverage. However, it has become clear to the committee that while momentum continues to build within the educational community, the programs that serve the community at large have probably reached a limit.
In addition, the funding for GO READ as a community project has also reached a limit. For the past four years GO READ has continued with reserve funds from previous years and annual grants. Several of those grants are at the end of the funding cycle and all of the reserve funds were used in 2007. The Committee feels it would not make sense to aggressively fundraise for a project that may have run its course.
For these reasons, GO READ will not continue as it has in the past. Instead New Virginia Review will build on the energy and momentum gained in the schools and will continue to bring authors into the educational community. Where appropriate, the public will be invited to participate. Any additional funds received on behalf of GO READ will be used by New Virginia Review to coordinate authors in schools.
