About GO READ

Bringing Richmond area residents together
to read and discuss the same book at the same time

GO READ began in 2002 as an initiative to build a stronger community through reading and discussion. One book of literary fiction is chosen each year to be read and discussed over several months, ending with a residency by the featured author. GO READ programs are held in libraries, schools and book discussion groups. Community organizations are encouraged to be involved in the way that best meets their mission. All programs are free and open to the public. This unique project will have a lasting impact on the community by: increasing interaction based on a shared reading experience; bringing major authors to a new and diverse audience; promoting discussion between people of different ages and backgrounds; and bringing more people into libraries and book stores.

Since 2002, over 100,000 adults and young people have participated in the GO READ project. Featured books and authors have included A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, White People by Allan Gurganus and Charming Billy by Alice McDermott. This conservative estimate is based on participation by schools and community organizations, circulation figures from area libraries, sales from local bookstores, web site information, and attendance at various GO READ events.
